First Class Graduates to serve as lecturers in universities

Nigerian University Graduates with first class grades and polytechnic Graduates with distinctions will henceforth carryout their compulsory primary assignment under the national youth service corps, NYSC, programme as lectures in universities.

This was made known today by The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi on Wednesday in Kaduna while speaking at a two-day pre-mobilization workshop for the 2015 batch "B" NYSC programme.

Also introduced by the DG is the online certificate verification procedure which is aimed at simplifying the procedures for certificate verification and inquiries. This process will help make participation into the national service more transparent and less cumbersome.

The issue of admitting serving corp members into post-graduate by some Nigerian Universities was also condemned by the general as he hinted that doing this violates the NYSC ACT and leads to unwanted distraction to their service programme. He also pleaded with Nigerian Universities to reciprocate the posting of Corp members to serve as lecturers by offering them permanent appointment after service.

Declaring the workshop open, the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, applauded the decision to post first class graduate corps members to tertiary institutions, adding that with the paucity of lecturers in such institutions, it was an encouraging decision of the NYSC to do so.

The Governor equally applauded the attitude of corps members engaged in conducting national elections and census, stressing that their level of patriotism and sacrifices have elicited the support of his administration.
The governor said the scheme has so far justified the objectives for which it was established.

Now i think Nigerian students in the universities would see the need to study hard in order to make good grades in order to be able to serve at the universities where they may be retained as permanent staffs.
